Yasmin: Reliable Hormonal Contraception with Acne Control
Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill that offers dual-action benefits for women seeking effective birth control and improved skin health. Each tablet contains a balanced formulation of ethinylestradiol and drospirenone, providing 24-hour contraceptive coverage while also addressing moderate acne vulgaris in women who choose oral contraception. This product is designed for daily administration as part of a structured 28-day cycle, offering both convenience and clinical efficacy when used as directed under medical supervision.

- Contains 0.03 mg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone per active tablet

- Demonstrates favorable cycle control with predictable withdrawal bleeding
- May alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and water retention
- Offers non-contraceptive health benefits including reduced ovarian cancer risk

Common use
Yasmin is primarily prescribed for contraception in women of reproductive age. Additionally, it is indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years old who have no known contraindications to combined hormonal contraception, have achieved menarche, and desire oral contraception. The acne treatment benefit is achieved through drospirenone’s anti-androgenic activity, which reduces sebum production and improves skin condition over successive treatment cycles.
Dosage and direction
Take one tablet daily at approximately the same time each day, following the directional arrows on the blister pack. Begin with the first active tablet (marked with day of week) on the first day of menstrual bleeding or the Sunday after menstruation begins. Continue taking one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by 7 days of placebo tablets. Withdrawal bleeding typically occurs during the placebo week. Start a new pack the day after finishing the previous pack, regardless of bleeding status. For first-cycle protection, use additional contraception for the first 7 days of administration.
Precautions
Medical examination should precede prescription, including blood pressure measurement and assessment of personal and family medical history. Regular follow-up visits are recommended at least every 6 months. Discontinue immediately if any of the following occur: sudden severe headache, migraine with aura, sudden partial or complete loss of vision, thrombosis symptoms, chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, jaundice, hepatitis, significant blood pressure increase, or severe abdominal pain. Smoking increases risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, particularly in women over 35 years.

- Known or suspected carcinoma of breast or estrogen-dependent neoplasia
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known or suspected pregnancy

Possible side effects
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 users): headache, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, menstrual cycle irregularities during initial cycles. Less common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 users): vomiting, diarrhea, contact lens intolerance, weight changes, hypertension, libido changes. Rare but serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention: venous thromboembolism, arterial thromboembolism, hepatic tumors, gallbladder disease, hypertension, and rare cases of hormone-dependent cancers.
Drug interaction
Yasmin’s efficacy may be reduced by: antibiotics (particularly rifampicin), anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenytoin, barbiturates), antiretroviral medications, St. John’s Wort, and some antifungal agents. Drospirenone may increase potassium levels when taken with other potassium-sparing drugs, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor antagonists, heparin, aldosterone antagonists, and NSAIDs. Consult healthcare provider about all medications, including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements.
Missed dose
If less than 12 hours late: take tablet immediately and continue schedule. If more than 12 hours late: take missed tablet immediately, even if two tablets in one day, and use additional contraception for next 7 days. If missed during first week and had intercourse in previous 5 days, consider emergency contraception. If three or more active tablets missed: discard current pack, start new pack after 7-day tablet-free interval, and use additional contraception for 7 days.
Overdose
Serious ill effects have not been reported following overdose. Possible symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding. There is no specific antidote. Treatment should be symptomatic. Medical supervision is recommended, particularly for children who might accidentally ingest tablets.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C) in original blister pack to protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after expiration date printed on packaging. Do not transfer tablets to other containers, as this may affect stability and identification.
