Flixotide Nasar Spray 100 Doses is a prescription corticosteroid nasal spray indicated for the management and prophylaxis of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis. It contains fluticasone propionate, a potent anti-inflammatory agent that targets nasal inflammation at its source. This formulation provides consistent, localized relief with minimal systemic absorption, making it suitable for long-term management of chronic nasal symptoms. Proper administration technique is essential for optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Features

  • Contains 100 metered doses of fluticasone propionate (50 mcg per spray)
  • Designed for intranasal administration with precision dosing mechanism
  • Preservative-free formulation in many markets
  • Compatible with most nasal adapter devices for pediatric or geriatric use
  • Shelf-stable at room temperature until initial activation
  • Manufactured under pharmaceutical GMP standards

Benefits

  • Provides targeted relief from nasal congestion, sneezing, and rhinorrhea
  • Reduces nasal inflammation at the mucosal level with minimal systemic exposure
  • Prevents symptom recurrence when used prophylactically
  • Suitable for long-term management of chronic rhinitis conditions
  • Rapid onset of action with effects typically noticeable within 12 hours
  • Compatible with most concomitant allergy medications

Common use

Flixotide Nasal Spray is primarily indicated for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis. It is also used off-label for nasal polyp management and as adjunctive therapy in eosinophilic rhinitis. The spray is typically prescribed when first-line antihistamines provide insufficient symptom control or when inflammatory components dominate the clinical presentation.

Dosage and direction

Adults and adolescents (12 years and older): The recommended starting dose is 2 sprays (100 mcg) in each nostril once daily, or 1 spray (50 mcg) in each nostril twice daily. Maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 sprays (200 mcg) per nostril.

Children (4-11 years): 1 spray (50 mcg) in each nostril once daily. Maximum dose: 2 sprays (100 mcg) per nostril daily.

Administration technique: Shake gently before use. Prime the pump before first use by spraying into the air until a fine mist appears. Gently blow nose to clear nostrils. Tilt head slightly forward and insert nozzle into nostril, pointing toward the outer corner of the eye. Spray while breathing in gently through the nose. Repeat for other nostril. Avoid blowing nose for 15 minutes after administration.

Precautions

  • Not for ophthalmic use; avoid contact with eyes
  • Monitor for signs of nasal septal perforation or ulceration with long-term use
  • Use with caution in patients with recent nasal surgery or trauma
  • May mask symptoms of nasal infections; appropriate diagnosis required
  • Glaucoma and cataract risk may increase with prolonged high-dose use
  • Adrenal suppression possible with very high doses or concomitant oral steroids
  • Growth monitoring recommended in pediatric patients on long-term therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any excipients
  • Active untreated nasal infections
  • Tuberculosis or untreated fungal/bacterial/viral systemic infections
  • Recent nasal surgery until complete healing confirmed
  • Severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C)
  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed (Category C)

Possible side effects

Common (≥1/100): Nasal irritation, mild epistaxis, headache, unpleasant taste, sneezing immediately after use

Uncommon (≥1/1000): Nasal ulceration, pharyngitis, dry nasal mucosa, nasal septum perforation

Rare (<1/1000): Anaphylaxis, angioedema, bronchospasm, vision changes, adrenal suppression

Very rare: Glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure, cataracts with long-term use

Drug interaction

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, ritonavir) may increase systemic exposure
  • Concurrent use with other nasal corticosteroids may increase adverse effects
  • No significant interactions with most antihistamines or decongestants
  • Caution with other immunosuppressants due to increased infection risk
  • May reduce efficacy of nasal vaccines; separate administration by ≥2 weeks

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, administer as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed administration. Maintain regular dosing schedule; the prophylactic nature of treatment means occasional missed doses may not significantly impact overall efficacy.

Overdose

Acute overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic effects due to low bioavailability. Single doses up to 2 mg (40 sprays) have been administered without adverse effects. Chronic overdose may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects including hypercortisolism, adrenal suppression, or Cushing’s syndrome. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive; consider gradual dose reduction rather than abrupt discontinuation if adrenal suppression is suspected.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15-30°C) in an upright position. Protect from light and excessive heat. Do not freeze. Discard 30 days after first opening, even if not completely used. Keep out of reach of children. Do not store in bathroom due to humidity variations. Do not puncture or incinerate the container.

Reviews

“After years of struggling with perennial allergic rhinitis, Flixotide has provided consistent relief without the drowsiness associated with oral antihistamines. The 100-dose format is cost-effective for long-term management.” - Allergy Specialist, London

“Clinical trials demonstrate significant improvement in nasal symptom scores compared to placebo, with excellent safety profile for maintenance therapy. Particularly effective for patients with mixed rhinitis phenotypes.” - Clinical Immunologist, Boston

“Patient compliance is generally good due to once-daily dosing option. The spray mechanism delivers consistent dose without dripping, which patients appreciate.” - ENT Specialist, Sydney

“While effective, proper technique education is crucial. Many treatment failures relate to incorrect administration rather than drug inefficacy.” - Respiratory Pharmacist, Toronto
