Eurax: Expert-Prescribed Relief for Intense Pruritus
Eurax (crotamiton) is a topical antipruritic and scabicidal agent formulated for the targeted management of severe itching and scabies infestations. As a cornerstone in dermatological therapy, its dual-action mechanism provides both immediate symptomatic relief and definitive parasitic eradication. This monograph provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview for healthcare professionals, detailing its pharmacological profile, clinical applications, and essential safety information to guide appropriate therapeutic use.
Features
- Contains 10% w/w crotamiton as the active pharmaceutical ingredient.
- Available in a topical cream formulation for direct cutaneous application.
- Possesses both antipruritic (anti-itch) and scabicidal (anti-mite) properties.
- Formulated with emollient bases to help soothe and protect irritated skin.
- Designed for topical use only; not for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal administration.
Benefits
- Provides rapid and effective relief from intense pruritus associated with various dermatoses, allergic reactions, and scabies.
- Eradicates Sarcoptes scabiei mites and their eggs, treating the underlying cause of scabies.
- Reduces the urge to scratch, thereby minimizing further skin damage, lichenification, and risk of secondary bacterial infection.
- Soothes irritated skin and helps restore the skin’s barrier function through its emollient properties.
- Offers a well-established safety profile for use in appropriate patient populations when applied as directed.
Common use
Eurax is primarily indicated for the treatment of scabies, a contagious skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is also extensively used for the symptomatic relief of pruritus (itching) that is not associated with scabies, such as that caused by allergic dermatitis, urticaria, chickenpox, or other pruritic conditions. Its use is predicated on a confirmed diagnosis or clinical suspicion of these conditions.
Dosage and direction
For Scabies:
- Thoroughly wash and dry the entire body.
- Apply a thin layer of Eurax cream from the chin down, covering all skin surfaces, paying particular attention to folds, creases, between fingers and toes, and under nails.
- Avoid application to the face, eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
- Reapply a second application 24 hours after the first.
- Take a thorough bath 48 hours after the final application to remove the medication.
For Pruritus:
- Apply a thin layer to the affected areas and gently massage into the skin until absorbed.
- May be repeated as necessary, typically 2-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
Always wash hands thoroughly after application, unless treating the hands themselves.
Precautions
- For external use only. If contact with eyes occurs, rinse immediately with copious amounts of water.
- Do not apply to acutely inflamed, raw, or weeping skin surfaces.
- Discontinue use and consult a physician if condition worsens or if signs of irritation or sensitization develop.
- Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
- The safety and efficacy in children under 3 years of age has not been fully established; use only under direct medical supervision.
Contraindications
Eurax is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to crotamiton or any of the excipients in the formulation.
Possible side effect
While generally well-tolerated, the following adverse reactions may occur:
- Dermatological: Contact dermatitis, skin irritation, burning sensation, erythema, and rash.
- Allergic: Hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria and angioedema, in susceptible individuals. Side effects are typically mild and transient. Patients should be advised to report any persistent or severe reactions.
Drug interaction
Formal drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topical crotamiton. Due to its minimal systemic absorption, the potential for clinically significant pharmacokinetic interactions is low. However, caution is advised when using it concurrently with other topical medications on the same area of skin to avoid potential local interactions or increased irritation.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed for the treatment of scabies, apply it as soon as remembered and continue with the prescribed schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. For pruritic relief, apply when needed.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely due to the formulation and route of administration. Accidental ingestion may lead to systemic effects. Symptoms of oral ingestion may include nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal irritation. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center. Treatment is supportive.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C or 59°F to 86°F). Keep the tube tightly closed. Protect from excessive heat and direct light. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not freeze.

Reviews
“Eurax remains a reliable first-line option in my practice for managing severe pruritus, especially in elderly patients where systemic antihistamines may cause undesirable sedation. Its efficacy in scabies, when applied meticulously, is well-documented.” – Dr. Eleanor Vance, Dermatologist
“In pediatric cases of chickenpox with intense itching, a thin application of Eurax to unaffected areas provides significant comfort and helps prevent scarring from scratching, making it a valuable tool in our arsenal.” – Dr. Ben Chen, Pediatrician
“While newer agents exist, the cost-effectiveness and dual action of crotamiton make Eurax a practical choice for scabies treatment in resource-limited settings and for patients with contraindications to other therapies.” – Dr. Imani Adebayo, Infectious Disease Specialist
