Asthalin Inhaler is a rapid-onset bronchodilator containing salbutamol sulfate, designed for the immediate relief of acute bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As a selective beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, it works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways, facilitating easier breathing within minutes of administration. It is a cornerstone of rescue therapy in respiratory management, trusted by clinicians worldwide for its efficacy and reliability in emergency and maintenance use.
Features
- Contains salbutamol sulfate 100 mcg per puff
- Metered-dose inhaler (MDI) delivery system
- Rapid onset of action, typically within 5 minutes
- Portable and easy to use with proper technique
- Compatible with spacer devices for improved drug delivery
- Each canister provides 200 actuations
Benefits
- Provides quick relief from acute asthma attacks and exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Reduces wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath effectively
- Helps restore normal breathing patterns during exacerbations
- Supports improved exercise tolerance and daily activity performance
- Minimizes emergency room visits through timely symptom management
- Enhances quality of life by enabling better respiratory control
Common use
Asthalin Inhaler is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway diseases, including asthma and COPD. It is used as a rescue medication during acute episodes of breathlessness, as well as prophylactically before exercise or exposure to known triggers such as allergens, cold air, or pollutants. It may also be utilized in the management of bronchitis and emphysema where bronchospasm is a significant component.
Dosage and direction
For relief of acute symptoms: Adults and children over 4 years—1 to 2 puffs every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Maximum daily dosage should not exceed 8 puffs in 24 hours unless directed by a physician. For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm: 2 puffs 15 to 30 minutes before exercise. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully, place mouthpiece between lips, and inhale deeply while pressing down firmly on the canister. Hold breath for 10 seconds if possible, then exhale slowly. Wait at least 1 minute between puffs. Rinse mouth with water after use to reduce the risk of oral thrush.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders (e.g., hypertension, arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease), diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or seizure disorders. Monitor for paradoxical bronchospasm—if it occurs, discontinue use immediately. Excessive use may lead to loss of effectiveness and increased risk of severe asthma attacks. Not recommended as the sole therapy for severe or unstable asthma. Pulmonary function and cardiovascular status should be periodically assessed in long-term users. Avoid exposing the inhaler to high temperatures or puncturing the canister.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation. Should not be used in patients with tachyarrhythmias or known idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. Not indicated for the prevention of preterm labor. Contraindicated in cases of severe cardiac disease uncontrolled by medication.
Possible side effects
Common: tremor, nervousness, headache, tachycardia, palpitations, muscle cramps, throat irritation, cough. Less common: hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, dizziness, nausea, paradoxical bronchospasm. Rare: allergic reactions, angioedema, chest pain, arrhythmias. Most side effects are dose-dependent and transient. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen.
Drug interaction
May interact with beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol), which can antagonize bronchodilator effects. Concurrent use with other sympathomimetic agents may increase cardiovascular side effects. Diuretics or corticosteroids may exacerbate hypokalemia. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants can potentiate cardiovascular effects. Use with xanthine derivatives (e.g., theophylline) may increase the risk of adverse effects. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications being taken.
Missed dose
Asthalin is used as needed for symptom relief; it does not require a fixed dosing schedule. If using regularly and a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Overdose may manifest as exaggeration of known side effects, such as tachycardia, tremor, hypotension, angina, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. Severe overdose can lead to cardiac arrest or convulsions. Treatment is supportive and may include cardioselective beta-blockers (with caution in asthmatic patients), electrolyte monitoring, and symptomatic management. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Avoid freezing, direct sunlight, or excessive heat. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children. Discard the inhaler after the labeled number of actuations has been used, as the amount of medication per puff may thereafter be inconsistent.
