Alavert is a leading over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine medication specifically formulated to provide effective, 24-hour relief from seasonal and perennial allergy symptoms. Its active ingredient, loratadine, is a second-generation antihistamine recognized for its potent efficacy and favorable safety profile. Designed for adults and children ages 6 and above, Alavert works by selectively blocking peripheral histamine H1-receptors, thereby alleviating symptoms without crossing the blood-brain barrier to cause significant drowsiness. This makes it an ideal choice for individuals requiring symptom control while maintaining full daily alertness and productivity.

Features

  • Contains 10 mg of loratadine, a clinically-proven second-generation antihistamine, per tablet.
  • Formulated as orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) for administration without water.
  • Provides 24-hour continuous relief from a broad spectrum of allergy symptoms upon proper dosing.
  • Non-drowsy formula for most patients, supporting normal daily activities.
  • Sugar-free, dye-free, and alcohol-free formulation.
  • Available in various OTC formats including tablets and liquid-gels.

Benefits

  • Rapid and Long-Lasting Symptom Control: Experience relief from sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and itchy throat/palate within hours, with protection lasting a full day.
  • Sustained Mental Clarity and Alertness: The non-sedating profile allows you to drive, operate machinery, work, and study without the impairment associated with first-generation antihistamines.
  • Convenient and Discreet Dosing: The orally disintegrating tablet format dissolves on the tongue within seconds, making it easy to take anywhere, anytime, without the need for water.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Effective management of allergic rhinitis symptoms enables better sleep, increased participation in outdoor activities, and overall enhanced daily functioning.
  • Suitable for a Wide Patient Demographic: Approved for use in adults and children 6 years of age and older, making it a versatile option for family allergy management.

Common use

Alavert (loratadine) is indicated for the effective relief of symptoms associated with:

  • Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Including sneezing, rhinorrhea (runny nose), pruritus (itching) of the nose, palate, throat, and eyes, and lacrimation (watering eyes).
  • Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: Year-round allergy symptoms caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores.
  • Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: For the treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of hives (red, itchy welts) of unknown cause, reducing pruritus and the number and size of hives.

Dosage and direction

  • Adults and Children 6 Years and Older: The standard dose is one 10 mg tablet once daily.
  • Administration: Place the orally disintegrating tablet on the tongue. It will dissolve rapidly within seconds and can be swallowed with or without water. Take with or without food.
  • Timing: For 24-hour coverage, administer at approximately the same time each day.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Use in children under 6 years of age should only be done under the direction and supervision of a physician.

Precautions

  • While loratadine is non-drowsy for the vast majority of users, a small percentage of individuals may experience drowsiness. Exercise caution when driving, operating complex machinery, or engaging in activities requiring full alertness until you know how Alavert affects you.
  • Patients with liver impairment or severe kidney impairment should consult a healthcare professional before use, as dosage adjustment may be necessary.
  • The tablets contain phenylalanine (a component of aspartame); individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) should be aware that each tablet contains 8.4 mg of phenylalanine.
  • If an allergic reaction to Alavert occurs, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention.
  • Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.

Contraindications

Alavert is contraindicated in patients with:

  • A known hypersensitivity to loratadine or to any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation.
  • Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min) without appropriate dosage adjustment as directed by a physician.

Possible side effect

Loratadine is generally well-tolerated. In clinical studies, the incidence of adverse events was similar to that of placebo. Side effects, when they occur, are typically mild and transient.

  • Common (≥1/100): Headache, somnolence (drowsiness), fatigue, dry mouth.
  • Uncommon (≥1/1,000 to <1/100): Nervousness, dizziness, increased appetite, nausea, abdominal distress, palpitations, tachycardia, rash, alopecia.
  • Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, and angioedema, have been reported very rarely.

Drug interaction

  • CNS Depressants: While loratadine has a low potential for interaction, the theoretical additive effects with other CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opioid analgesics, antipsychotics, other sedating antihistamines) should be considered.
  • Inhibitors of CYP3A4 and CYP2D6: Loratadine is metabolized by these liver enzymes. Concomitant use with potent inhibitors of these enzymes (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin, cimetidine, fluoxetine, quinidine) may increase plasma concentrations of loratadine, potentially increasing the risk of side effects, including drowsiness. Clinical monitoring is advised.

Missed dose

  • If you miss a dose of Alavert, take it as soon as you remember.
  • However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

  • In the event of a suspected overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center.
  • Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, tachycardia, and headache.
  • Standard supportive measures are recommended. Gastric lavage may be considered shortly after ingestion. Loratadine is not eliminated by hemodialysis.

Storage

  • Store Alavert at room temperature, between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Keep the blister package or bottle tightly closed in its original packaging to protect from moisture and light.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
